Grenada is hosting its 10th annual, weeklong Grenada Chocolate Festival from May 16 to 21. The festival celebrates the history and culture of chocolate production on the island.

This year's festival will focus on rum as well as chocolate. Attendees can learn about the history of rum and chocolate production in Grenada and attend a mix of rum tastings and tours at local distilleries. Visitors can also explore the cocoa fields of sustainable chocolate factories and participate in chocolate arts and crafts and chocolate yoga meditation.

"Grenada's volcanic soil, warm weather, and thick rainforests make the island an ideal climate to grow fine cocoa, of which only 12% of the world's exported beans have this designation," said Petra Roach, CEO of the Grenada Tourism Authority. "Here in the Spice Isle, 100% of our cocoa exports are classified as fine-flavored cocoa. Today, Grenada produces about 800 tons of cocoa per year, contributing to 6% of GDP."

The festival opens with rum tastings and truffle making at the Tri-Island Chocolate Factory and a visit to the House of Chocolate in the morning ($89, transportation not included). An opening celebration will be held in the afternoon at the Westerhall Estate, where food and drinks will be available for sale. A closing party will be held at Le Phare Bleu for final toasts, tastings and live music. Food and drinks will be available for sale. Admission to both the opening and closing events is free.
